The energetics of essential oils

Essential oils have powerful and beautiful gifts to offer our body and mind. Not only do they act on our body on a cellular level to help with physical wellbeing, they also help us on an energetic, spiritual and emotional level.

You don’t need a book or an aromatherapy qualification to use oils for your emotional and energetic well being. This can be felt or sensed using what you already know about yourself and the plants, fruits, or trees.

For example, Rose oil. When I think of the rose I see it as a symbol of love, gifted throughout the ages as a token of love. When I imagine the rose I imagine femininity and sensuality. Just with this short reflection on the qualities of the rose I know I could use rose essential oil if I want to increase feelings of love, compassion and femininity.

Another example would be wild orange. When you close your eyes and imagine the wild orange tree you might imagine the lush green leaves and the large juicy abundant orange fruits. The uplifting smell of the orange zest. The sheer abundance of nature represented by the fruits of this tree. So, if you are wanting to use an oil to feel uplifted and abundant you might want to work with wild orange.

One final example from the tree oils. Cedarwood. Imagine that strong dignified tree. Roots burrowing deep into the ground. Steadfast and sturdy but flexible enough to sway with the wind. Branches and leaves reaching up to the skies. Strong in its individuality but also contributing to the whole ecosystem by its sheer presence. You might want to meditate on these qualities as you use cedarwood when you need to feel grounded and rooted in your life.

I invite you to browse any essential oils that you have, choose the one you are drawn to without questioning it. Sit with the oil for a while and contemplate the properties of the plant, fruit or tree that the oil came from. Is it floral and feminine? Juicy and fruity? Or a strong sturdy tree? Dilute a few drops of the oil with a carrier oil and apply to your hands and take some deep breaths. You might apply some over your heart chakra or the soles of your feet for grounding as you meditate on the quality of the oil. Journal any thoughts that arise or consider inviting the properties of the oil into your life as you move through the day. If you choose a wild orange, notice all the abundance in your life. If you choose a tree oil take time to stop and root yourself down, grounding yourself in each moment.

Over the coming weeks I will share some of my favourite essential oils and some simple rituals that you can weave into your daily life to connect you with the energy of nature through your essential oils. I hope you enjoy the journey.
